The storm is turmoil contained by the circle of unity. The figures are from the famous wampum belt given to the Iroquois confederacy by George Washington in the 1790’s to negotiate a peace treaty.
"The Heart of the Nation-Refugees 1" is part of the "Spiritual Ground" series of mixed media photo collage originals and prints (1996 - 2000). Inspired by questions and experiences relating to my cultural heritage and personal spiritual growth, this series reflects my connection to the land and locations of my indigenous ancestors.
These intricate collage images are made from photographic cutouts with occasional found imagery or drawing added. On average, I’ve layered 25-40 separate contoured fragments to create the effect. I like to think of them as “visual soul”, a refuge from our materialistic work world slumber, and a window through which we can look inward and outward at the same time.
