The medicine wheel is the visual equivalent of the “All My Relations” philosophy, an affirmation meaning I am one with everything, everybody, the entire universe and the “Great Mysterious” or “First Cause.” Native science holds that all things exist in balance and in relation to all other things, with no hierarchy. We are a part of everything and everything is a part of us.
What you see is a five piece “walk-around” fiber installation titled the "Indigenous Iconic Earth Altar." It consists of an octagonal medicine wheel encircled by four iconic “power dresses.” It took me three years to piece together this “we are all related” belief system. Through a greater understanding of the nature of duality, the life force, seasonal cycles, earth elements and so on, the process of completing it has helped to open up a doorway to the essential teachings of Indigenous American belief.
Traditionally North American hide dresses and shirts were, in a sense, wearable medicine wheels. In their design, many of these garments clearly show the horizon line between the earth and sky or middle and upper worlds, a basic division that portrays the unity and interdependence between humans and the universe. This serves as a connecting point between the wheel and the dresses from both a design and conceptual standpoint.
